Charles E. Van Gorden was the son of James H. Van Gorden (September 18, 1821 - December 27, 1860) and his wife Harriet (b. abt 1823 in Columbia Co.) James and Harriet had the following children: James Henry  (1846-1906), Charles E. (1847-1925), Irving W. (b. abt 1849) Caroline H. (1852 - 1933), Mary C. (1854 - 1931), Helen E. (1856 - 1922), Frank E. (1859 - 1928) and Sarah W. (1861  1932).

Charles' father, James H. was the publisher of The Banner of Industry.

Charles is buried is Thomson St. Cemetery, along with his father and most of his siblings, most of whom remained single as he did. Charles is first identified as a photographer in the 1880 census and remained in business on Main St. well into his 60's. His sisters ran a very successful book and stationery store, which is still, in 2009 a thriving business in Catskill.
