School Teacher and Librarian
TANNERSVILLE -- Gladine Mary (Davis) Colton, 95, a former school teacher in Cairo and librarian in Tannersville, died peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, in Santa Monica, Calif.
She was born to the late William J. Davis and Blanche (Wilson) Davis in Rodman on Oct. 17, 1905. She moved to Adams Center when she was 11 years old and lived there until she graduated from College.
Mrs. Colton graduated from St. Lawrence University in 1926 with a B.S. degree in biology and education. She later earned a Masters in library science at the New York State College for Teachers in Albany.
She taught science in the Cairo School District, where she lived for many years. She and her husband moved to Tannersville in 1947 where she later became librarian. After her retirement in 1969, she and her husband spent the winter months in Santa Monica, Calif., to be near family members.
Mrs. Colton was a member of the order of the Eastern Star Cairo Chapter No. 380, the Delta Kappa Gamma Honor Society for Teachers, and many professional organizations. She was known for her love of family, friends, flowers, knowledge, gems and collecting, and also for her “laughing blue eyes.”
Survivors include two grandchildren, Kent William
Colton and Karen (Colton) Badt, both of Santa Monica; two nieces, two nephews,
and a cousin.  She was predeceased
by her husband of 45 years, Russell R. Colton, her son, John William Colton, and
her sister, Miriam Pfordte.
Funeral services will be March 6, 2001, at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Santa Monica, Calif.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be
made to the hunter-Tannersville Central School, Colton Family Memorial,

CATSKILL -- Mary F. Christiana Dushane, 75, of 86 West Bridge St., died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2991, at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.
Born May 22, 1925, in Glasco, Ulster County, she was the daughter of the late George Christiana and Nettie (Sherman) Christiana.
Survivors include three sons:  John Dushane and Stanley Dushane, both of Catskill, and
Bernard Dushane of Schoharie; a sister, Pearl Murphy of Chicopee, Mass.; eight
grandchildren’ two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Traver & McCurry Funeral Home at 234 Jefferson Heights in Catskill.
Service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Fr. Richard Jacobs of St. Patrick’s R.C. Church in Catskill will officiate.
Internment will follow at the Town of Catskill Cemetery.

HUDSON – Carmon “Johnny Johnson” James, 59 of Warren Street, Hudson, died Monday, Feb. 26, 2001.
He was born June 6, 1941, in Jamaica, West Indies, to the late Zeyra James and Margie James.
He worked at various locations in the area.
Survivors include two brothers, Syran James of Miami Fla., and Jimmy James of Palm Beach, Fla.; a sister, Oyaza James of Jamaica, West Indies; a cousin and a dear friend Francis Dixon of Catskill.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the State Street A.M.E. Zion Church, 201 State St. Hudson.

IBM employee
ATHENS – Mark Scarantino Sr., 42 of 52 North Franklin St. , Athens formerly of Forty Fort, Pa., died in an automobile accident Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, on his way home from work at IBM in Poughkeepsie.
Mr. Scarantino was employed by IBM for 22 years. He also was an avid motorcyclist and golfer.
Survivors include his parents, Ann Scarantino and Carl Scarantino of Forty Fort, Pa.; his wife, Virginia Scarantino of Athens; a daughter Angie Scarantino of Athens; a son mark Scarantino Jr. of Athens; a sister, Robyn, and a nephew, Zachary Gramps, both of West Wyoming, Pa.
There will be a public memorial service 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick’s Church at 19 North Franklin St, in Athens.

– Michael R. Rossano, 87, of Deiderich’s Trailer Park, West Coxsackie, died
suddenly, Feb. 27, 2001, at his residence after injuries sustained in a house
fire.
He was born Oct. 23, 1913 in Glasco, the son of the late Joseph Rossano and Rose
Rossano.
Mr. Rossano was predeceased by his wife, Louise Rossano.
Private cremation took place March 1 at the
Wiltwyck Crematory in Kingston.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the W.C. Brady’s Sons Funeral Home Inc. at 97 Mansion St. in Coxsackie.

ATHENS -- Edward A. Mann Sr., 87, of Rivertown Senior Citizens Apartments, Athens, died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill.
Born Aug. 26, 1913, in Chicago, he was the son of the late Alexander Mann and Clara (Newman) Mann.
Mr.
Mann served in the U.S. Army ad was a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his daughter, Theresa A. LaSala of Coxsackie; five grandchildren, Steven Mann of Albany, Michele Petrides of West Hempstead, Malinda Mann of Poughkeepsie, Suzanne Mann of New Jersey and Michael J. Taft of Catskill; and nine great-grandchildren.
Mr.
Mann was predeceased by his wife, Vincenza Mann, on July 3, 1977.
Private
funeral services were held Thursday, March 1, at the Traver & McCurry
Funeral Home at 234 Jefferson Heights in Catskill. 
Pastor John J. Murphy of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in
Catskill will officiate.
Interment

– Eleanor M. Clearwater Slater, 67, of Tenth Street, Catskill, died Thursday,
March 1, 2001, at Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill.
Born
April 1, 1933, in Catskill, she was the daughter of the late Richard Clearwater
and Ada (Sherman) Clearwater.
Mrs.
Slater was an employee of Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill prior to her
illness.
Survivors
include five brothers, Arthur Sherman, Richard Clearwater, Vernon Clearwater,
Reginald Clearwater and David Clearwater, all of Catskill; six sisters, Dorothy
Miller of Catskill, Ada Rocco of Elizaville, Geraldine Sutton of Greenville,
Florence “Janet” Clearwater of Athens, Marilyn Bayly of Pennsylvania and
Rose Stumn of California; and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs.
Slater was predeceased by her husband, William E. Slater, on March 3, 1998; and
three sisters, Alice Erceg, Shirley Clearwater and Jenny Clearwater; and a
brother, Norman Clearwater.
Private
cremation was performed at Park View Cemetery in Schenectady.

Friday, March 2, 2001, at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

Feb. 1, 1917, in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Morrison
and Mabel (Heckinger) Morrison.
Mrs.
Alia was a devoted wife for more than 40 years, and a warm and loving mother for
her entire life.
Formerly
of Nassau County, Long Island, she was a member of St. James Methodist Church
and St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lynnbrook.
She
had been an Athens resident for the past 14 years. 
She was a member of the Rivertown Senior Center.
Survivors
include a son, Bruce Alia; a daughter-in-law, Marsha, and grandson Dana, all of
Catskill; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling
hours were 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Traver and McCurry Feneral Home at 234

Lord.

Babbitt previously lived in Oneonta.
She
was a homemaker.

and two grandchildren, David and Carolyn Ray of Albany.
She
was predeceased by her husband, James Babbitt, in 1987; a sister, Edith Cook, in

Saturday, March 3, 2001, at the Stratton Veterans Administration Hospital in
Albany following a long illness.
Born
Dec. 23, 1948, in Chatham, he was the son of the late Frank Byles and Thelma (Gulreaux)
Byles.
During
his military years he served with the U.S. Army from 1970-1973. 
He was previously employed by the Textile By Products of Philmont.
Survivors
include a sister, Patricia Palen of Hudson; and two stepdaughters, Sharon
Buckley of Chatham and Rebecca Byles of Massachusetts.
Besides
his parents, Mr. Byles is predeceased by two sisters, Joanne Byles and Dolores
Jennings.

– Stephen N. Nickolich, 76, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001; at the Grand Strand
Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Born
April 3, 1924, in Cementon, he was the son of Nick and Madeline Sapunarich
Nickolich and raised at an early age by surrogate parents Anthony and Dora
Matutinovich, all of Croatian descent.
Mr.
Nickolich served with and received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army in
1946.  He worked for Alpha-Lehigh
Portland Cement Co. at many positions of expertise as both union and management
for 42 years.
He
enjoyed a prowess for athletic ability, becoming enshrined in the Kingston Old
Timers Baseball and Saugerties Sports Hall of Fame. 
Golfing became his forte during his retirement years. 
He held memberships in numerous local and interstate clubs.
He
was a member of the Cementon Sportsman Association; St. George Lodge 243 of the
Croatian Fraternal Union of America; New York State Board of Electrical
Underwriters Association; United Cement, Lime and Gypsum Workers International
Union and Catskill Elks Lodge NO. 1341 Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
He
as a communicant of St. Mary’s of the Snow Parish Church in Saugerties.
Survivors
include two sons, Stephen A. Nickolich of Saugerties and Mark J. Nicholich of
Saugerties; a brother, John A, Nicholich of Cementon; four grandchildren, Caine
Simmons, Stephanie Rose, Ashley Rita and Tyler Stephen, all of Saugerties; and
many nieces and nephews.
A
memorial Mass of Resurrection will be conducted 10 a.m. Friday, march 9, at St.
Mary’s of the Snow Parish Church in Saugerties.

MINN. Eleanore “Ellie” Saxe, 83, of Minnetonka, formerly of Eden Prairie
died recently in Minnetonka.
Survivors
include her husband, Frederick Saxe; her children, Mary Ann Thompson of
Moorhead, Eleanore Smith of New York and Annie Christopherson of Florida; and
her grandchildren, Chris and Kate Thompson.
She
was predeceased by two sons, Frederick Saxe and Richard Saxe.
Mrs.
Saxe was born on Staten Island and lived in New York City through young
adulthood.
She
shared the love of her Irish heritage with her family, living with enthusiasm,
good humor and a kind heart.  She
had a contagious, fun-loving spirit and an unfailing devotion to her family.

of Christian Burial was Feb, 23 at Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, 13505
Excelsior Blvd., Minnetonka.

– Matthew C. Story Jr., 67, of Story Farms, Kiskatom, died Sunday, March 4,
2001, at his home,
He
was born on Nov. 1, 1933, in Catskill, the son of the late Matthew Charles Story
and Virginia Blakelock Story.  He
was a graduate of Catskill High School.
Mr.
Story was a lifelong farmer.  He
owned and operated the Story Farms since he was a young man, along with his
wife, Margaret (Peggy) Stewart Story.  In
more recent years he farmed along with his sons, Matthew III and James.
For
40 years he was an active supporter of the Greene County Soul and Water
Conservation District and was currently chairman of its Board of Directors. 
He was a member of the Kiskatom Reformed Church and a lifelong member of
the Kiskatom Fire Company.
In
addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Matthew C. Story III of
Kiskatom, Kathleen Ciampa of Castleton, James B. Story of Kiskatom, Joann
DeForest of Stone Ridge; Cynthia Shanley and Melissa Story of Catskill; two
sisters, Nancy McTigue of Lancaster, Calif. and Carol Doney of Kiskatom; two
brothers, David Story of California and Thomas Story of Palenville; 21
grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

– Evelyn J. Craft, 79, of Eden Park Nursing Home, Catskill, died March 5,
2001, after a long illness.
Born
May 17, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Rudolpf Walko and Catherine Walko.
Mrs.
Craft had been an area resident for the last 15 years. 
She was a member of the Greene County Department for the Aging and worked
as a volunteer in the Bereavement Program. 
She was also active in the Sing-A-Long Program.
Prior
to her retirement, she was employed as a mental hygiene staff attendant at
Pilgram State hospital in Long Island.
Survivors
include a son, Robert C, Craft of Troy; a daughter, Ruth C. Bowers of South
Cairo; and six grandchildren.
Mrs.
Bowers was predeceased by her husband, Robert Craft, in 1985. 
There
will be no calling hours.
Graveside
services will take place 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Catskill Rural Cemetery in
Jefferson Heights in Catskill.

– Jane “Jennie” Applebaum, 91, of Catskill, died Thursday, March 8, 2001,
at Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill.
A
lifelong Catskill native and resident, Mrs. Applebaum was born June 22, 1909,
the daughter of the late Michael Cooke and Rose (Daisernia) Cooke.
Mrs.
Applebaum was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church in Catskill. She was a
member of St. Patrick’s Rosary-Altar Society. 
Mrs. Applebaum was predeceased by her husband, Alvin N. Applebaum, on
Sept. 20, 1966.
Survivors
include a son; a brother, Cosmo Cooke of Catskill; two sisters, Julia Romano of
West Babylon and Irene Maher of Catskill; a most devoted niece, Phyllis DeLuca
of Catskill; and many other nieces and nephews.

Mrs.
Tressler was born in New York City on Dec. 11, 1906, and was the daughter of the
late Charles Mansfield and Ellen (Moore) Mansfield.
She
resided in the South Cairo area for more than 35 years and was active with the
South Cairo United Methodist Church bake sales. 
She loved to crochet and to bake.
She
was predeceased by her husband, William Tressler, in 1974.
Survivors
include three granddaughters, Patricia Andrisani of Scranton, Pa.; Diane
Paniccia of Shoreham, Lori Lerlein of East Patchogue; six great-grandchildren
and two dear friends, Deloris Post and Alma Veverka.

– Millard Irvin Noel, 93, retired Deputy Superintendent of Finance at
Coxsackie Correctional Facility, died Thursday, March 8, 2001, at Westgate
Convalescent Hospital in San Jose, Calif.
Born
Feb. 14, 1908, in Aspters, Pa., he was the son of the late Jacob Noel and Carrie
Barner Noel.
He
married the former Vera Anthes on Sept. 18, 1937. 
Mrs. Noel predeceased him in 1996.
Mr.
Noel had lived in Saratoga, Calif. with his son since 1998 and previously lived
at 4 Ivy Terrace, Catskill.
Mr.
Noel majored in business administration at the University of Buffalo.
He
was employed by Attica Prison until 1944 when he moved to Catskill and
transferred to Coxsackie Correctional Facility where he was institutional
steward for 29 years and deputy superintendent of finance in 1974; prior to his
retirement.
Mr.
Noel was a member of Catskill Untied Methodist Church, a 50-year member of
Highland Ely Parker Masonic Lodge No. 835, past patron of Betsy Ross-Levant
Chapter No. 695 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Buffalo, past patron and
50-year member of the Thorpe Chapter No. 462, Order of the Eastern Star in
Attica.
He
was also a member of the Rip Van Winkle Club, the Rip Van Winkle Senior Citizens
and Catskill Senior Fellowship.  He
served for 10 years in the volunteer income tax program under the auspices of
the Office of Aging.
Survivors
include two sons, Bruce Noel and Paul Noel; and two grandchildren, Krista Noel
Markert and Jeremy Noel.
A

– James T. Kelly, 84, of died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at his home in
Westkill.
Born
June 9, 1916 in West Brighton, Staten Island, he was the son of
Lieutenant Thomas A. Kelly and Stella Perini Kelly.
A longtime resident of Staten Island, he moved to Spruceton Valley in
1968.
From 1940 to 1949 he worked for the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard on Staten
Island as a gantry crane operator.  He
then established with his wife Evelyn, a general insurance agency, the Kelly
Agency, which operated from 1950 until 1972.
Starting in 1972, he lived and worked in Westkill, breeding quarter
horses and successfully competing in carriage competitions for many years.
Survivors include his sister, Patricia Cari of Cranberry,
N.J.; his daughter, Alice Kelly of Plainfield, N.J.; eight grandchildren; four
great-grandchildren; and friends Diane Clarke Maklae and Edgar Shoemaker.
Mr. Kelly was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn Kelly, in 1987.
Interment and memorial will be in the spring at Westkill Cemetery at the
convenience of the family.

– Carol Ann Paserba, 53, a teacher and longtime local resident, died Monday at
St. Francis Hospital.
Mrs. Paserba was a teacher of the second grade for 31 years in the
Cairo-Durham Central School District in Cairo.
She was born April 20, 1947, in Liberty, the daughter of Hilton Schmidt
and Louisa Bestenhinder.  She and
John Paserba were married in 1971.
Mrs. Paserba was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Highland
where she was a deacon and elder of the church. 
She also served on various committees.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Mark Paserba and Todd Paserba,
both of Highland; a sister, Ethel Hall of North Carolina; a brother, Donald
Schmidt of Syracuse; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by a sister, Elaine DeVaul.           
Calling hours are 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian
Church of Highland, 26 Church St. Highland. 
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. at the church.

He was born in New York City and was the son of the late Frank Cisler and

Methodist Church of Hudson officiating.
Interment will take place in the spring in the family plot of the Cairo
Cemetery.
During his military career he served in the U.S. Marines in the Korean
War.
Prior to his retirement he was a detective with the Suffolk County Police
Department.
At the time of his death he was a member of the Cairo-Durham
Elks.  This organization will hold
services in his memory Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

– Victor Prusky Jr., 76, of Earlton, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at the
Community Hospice at St. Peter’s Hospital after a long illness.
Born
in Stockport on June 8, 1924, he was the son of the late Elizabeth (Richards)
Prusky and Victor Prusky Sr.  He was
married to Josephine (Leonard) Prusky on May 2, 1947.  Josephine Prusky died Jan. 12, 1996.
Mr. Prusky had been a corrections officer at the Coxsackie Correctional
Facility for many years and retired in 1980. 
He was a life member of the Earlton Fire Department and a member of the
Loyal Order of the Moose and the Benevolent and Protective order of Elks in
Nucla, Colo.     
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and served on the USS Hornet. 
He was awarded four stars in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and two stars in
the Philippine Liberation.  He was a
member of the USS Savo Island CVE-78 Reunion.
Survivors include a son, Victor Prusky III of Coxsackie; two daughters,
Karen Linders of Earlton and Barbara Prusky of Cairo; two sisters, Margaret
McStein of Coxsackie and Loretta Kenzel; two granddaughters, Charlotte Blair of
Climax and Kym Warner of Earlton; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces
and nephews.
In accordance with Mr. Prusky’s wishes, no funeral services will be
held and interment will be private.

-- Thurston “Toot” Vaughn, 81, of Greenville, died Thursday, March
15, 2001, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany.
Born July 17, 1919, in Greenville, he was the son of the late Thurman
Vaughn and Charlotte (Elliot) Vaughn.
Mr. Vaughn was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army. 
He was a former highway superintendent for the Town of Westerlo, and had
previously worked for Walters Trucking, Schwedrmann Trucking and VanAuken’s
Express.  He drove a school bus for
the Greenville Central School District and had also delivered mail from the
Greenville Post Office.
He was a member and former past master of James Austin Lodge No., 557 F.
& A.M., a member and former past commander of Greenville American Legion
Post No. 291, a member of the Association of Highway Superintendents of Albany
County and a member of Christ Episcopal Church.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth “Betty” (Winn) Vaughn; three
daughters, Mildred Gipprich of Greenville, Cheryl Ann Vaughn of Delmar and Lena
Savino of South Westerlo; four sons, Roger Vaughn of Cornwallville, T. Walter
Vaughn of Hudson, Kenneth Friss of Kingston and Curtis Vaughn of Riverbank,
Calif.; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; his stepmother, Mildred
(Stone) Vaughn of Warrensburg; two brothers, Everett Vaughn of Ballston Spa and
Robert Vaughn of Durham; and several nieces, nephews and great-nephews.
Mr. Vaughn was predeceased by his first wife, Alberta (Cross) Vaughn; a

whose ancestors came to America on the Mayflower, died Wednesday March 14, 2001,
at the Community Hospice at Columbia Memorial Hospital, in Hudson.
Born Dec. 6, 1907, in Napanoch, she was the daughter of Louisa DeWitt and
Charles Wesley Dewitt.
She married Charles Bower on Sept. 3, 1929.
She had been a resident of Bethany Village, West Coxsackie, since 1977
and was an active member of the Tenants Association for many years.
She was a member of the Bloomville Methodist Church, Bloomville Ladies
Auxiliary and Ladies Home Bureau.  She
worked for many years at Morton’s Department Store in Cairo.
Mrs. Bower is survived by her daughter Jeannine of New York City; two
sons, Charles “Skip” Bower of Bloomville and Michael of Coxsackie; and
numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband in 1976; a son, Karl Bower; a
granddaughter and a great-grandson.
Services were private.  The
family is planning an interment of Mrs. Bower’s cremated remains in the
Kerhonkson Cemetery in the spring.  Relatives
and friends will be notified of the date and time.

Se was a resident of Bethany Village since 1977, an active member of the
Tenants Association for many years.  Mrs.
Bower was born in Napanoch, N.Y. on Dec. 6, 1907, the daughter of the late
Louisa and Charles Wesley DeWitt.  Her
ancestors came over on the Mayflower.  She
married Charles Bower Sept. 3, 1929; he predeceased her in 1976.  A member of the Bloomville Methodist Church, Bloomville
Ladies Auxiliary and Ladies Home Bureau.  She

– Frank T. Fiederlein, 18, of Route 145, Cairo, died Friday, March 16, 2001,
at Albany Medical Center Hospital from injuries sustained in a pedestrian-car
accident Sunday evening.
Born Nov. 21, 1982, in Houston, Texas, he was the son of Richard
Fiederlein of Long Island and Kathleen McClosky Kaider of Cairo.
He attended Cairo-Durham High School for a time and enjoyed working with
ceramics and playing the guitar.
He had been an area resident since 1987.
In addition to his parents, survivors include his stepfather, Matthew
Kaider Jr, of Cairo; maternal grandparents, Gwen Jarosek and Frank Jarosek of
Texas; paternal grandmother, Mary Ellen Fiederlein of Long Island; a sister,
Christine Perrone of Cairo; a brother, Jeffery Parish Jr. of Catskill; and
several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Richards

Born July 22, 1969 in Kingston, she was the daughter of James R. Bagshaw
of Cairo and Margaret (Dewey) Bagshaw of Catskill.
Ms. Bagshaw attended St. Patrick’s Academy and was a graduate of St.
Patrick’s High School Class of 1987.
She was an employee at the Ambrosia Diner in Catskill.
In addition to her parents, survivors include a son, James R. Pine of
Catskill; grandparents, Manolo Calvo and Virginia Calvo of Earlton and Edward
Gallagher and Audrey Gallagher of South Cairo; her stepmother, Maureen Bagshaw
of Cairo; four sisters, Jennifer Dillworth of Earlton, Heather Bagshaw of

– Robert P. Carpenter, 78, of 70 Summit Ave., Catskill, died Friday, March 16,
2001 at Albany Medical Center.
Born Nov. 22, 1922 in Gloversville, he was the son of the late William
Carpenter and Alice (Maust) Carpenter.       
Mr. Carpenter served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II. 
He served on various destroyers in both the Atlantic and the Pacific
theaters. As a crewman aboard the U.S.S. Aaron Ward during the battle at Okinawa
in May of 1945, he survived six kamikaze hits on his ship that killed 42
shipmates and critically wounded more than 100 others.
He was an employee of New York Telephone for more than 30 years, retiring
in 1978.  He was a leader with the
Boy Scouts of America serving as scoutmaster for many years with Troup 72 of
Slingerlands.  He was a volunteer
for the Slingerlands Fire Department.
A Catskill resident for the last 35 years, Mr. Carpenter was a past
commander and adjutant of Sullivan Teator VFW Post No. 770, finance officer and
member of Honeyford Memorial Post No. 110 of the American Legion, Memorial Day
Committee chairman and Firing Squad captain for both, a member of the Catskill
Elks Lodge No. 1341 and a member of the Pioneers of America.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Betty Jean (Bowers) Carpenter of
Catskill; two sons, Dale Carpenter of Nazareth, Pa. and Jeffrey Carpenter of
Penfield; a daughter, Janet Buck of Wynantskill; two brothers, Harold Carpenter
of Fonda and Emery Carpenter of Saratoga; a sister Yvonne Orsini of Duanesburg;
six grandsons; two granddaughters; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Carpenter was predeceased by a brother Wayne Carpenter.
Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Traver & McCurry

Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Fonda.

– Richard W. Morrison, 74, of Dutch Village, Claverack, died Saturday at
Columbia Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 4, 1926 in Hudson, he was the son of the late Joseph Morrison
and Louise (Johnson) Morrison.
Mr. Morrison worked for more than 30 years at the Universal Atlas and the
Independent Cement Corp., where he retired as a Grade 1 welder.
He enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting. 
He was involved with many local organizations including Masonic Lodge No.
700, Hudson Fish and Game Club, the Federation of Polish Sportsmen and Greenport
Pumper Co. No. 1.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1949 – 1952 where he earned
such awards as a World War II Victory Medal, a Korean service medal with five
Bronze service stars, a U.N. service medal and a Good Conduct medal.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Sharon (Clukey)
Morrison of Claverack; four children, Sharon L. Stodolski of Ithaca, Joseph W.
Morrison Sr. of Hudson, Darlene A. McCabe of Hudson and Andrea J. Funk of
Hudson; seven grandchildren; and on great-grandson.
Mr. Morrison was predeceased by a sister, Regina Brown.

was a graduate of Valley Stream High School and the Barbizon School of Modeling.
Mrs. Duncan lived in Saratoga Springs for two years and was previously
from Wildwing Park in Catskill.
Survivors include her sons, John Duncan and Coleman Duncan Jr.; a
brother, Thomas Fisher; a sister, Janet Metzler; three grandchildren; and
several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. France was born in Oxford and lived for many years in Haines Falls
with her husband, Allen E. France, before moving to Saugerties. 
In 1989 they moved to Raleigh, N.C., and in 1998 Mrs. France went to live
with her daughter in Atlantic Beach, Fla.
Wile in Haines Falls and Saugerties, Mrs. France was active in the
Methodist Church and Echo Del Rebekah Lodge. 
She served as local school tax collector for many years. 
While in Raleigh, N.C., she was involved with volunteer work for local
hospitals.
Survivors include two daughters, June E. Addesso of Raleigh, N.C. and
Lois M. Gwisz of Atlantic Beach, Fla.; a son, Edward France of Beverly Hills,
Fla.; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Donald A. France of Haines Falls, and her
husband.
Interment will be in April at the convenience of the family.

Mrs. Ross was employed as a cook and a waitress for many years at the

electa and past noble grand of the Eleanor Heermance Rebekah Lodge of Athens.

She was a member of the Bloomville Methodist Church, Bloomville Ladies
Auxiliary and Ladies Home Bureau.  She
worked for many years at Morton’s Department Store in Cairo.

She married Frederick Leonhard in 1931.

working with puzzles.
She was a member of the First Reformed Church of West Coxsackie and was
an area resident since 1965.
Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy Bohn of Long Island; Rose Wood
of Coxsackie and Susan Vanderveer Menze, of Wisconsin; 10 grandchildren; and
several great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by her

He was a long-term employee of Haines Tire Co. in Catskill, and later,
Royal Tire in Kingston.

She loved painting, knitting, and crafts.

– Lawrence W. Linders, 75, of Earlton, died Saturday, March 24, 2001 at
Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson following a sudden illness.
Born June 28, 1925 in Belcaville, N.J., he was the son of the late Arthur
Linders and Jessie (Livingston) Linders.
Mr. Linders was the owner of Larry and Wally’s Floors in Athens for
many years.
A Navy veteran of World War II, he was stationed on the USS Marsh. 
He received the American and European Theatre Medals.  He was a fireman first class.
Survivors include his wife of more than 20 years, Karen Kay (Prusky)
Linders of Earlton; two sons, Lawrence C. Linders of Coxsackie and Kenneth
Linders of Athens; two daughters, Mary Brandow of Leeds and Charlotte Blair of
Climax; a brother, Frank Linders of Hudson; a sister, Dorothy Hance of
Calverton, L.I.; six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no public funeral service or
calling hours.

– Michael Charles Mario, 79, of Catskill, died Friday, March 23, 2001 at St.
Peter’s Hospital in Albany.
Born March 20, 1922 in New York City, he was the son of the late Solima
Mario and Felicia (Candano) Mario.
Mr. Mario had been a Catskill resident since 1988. 
He was a retired bookbinder in New York City.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II having attained the rank
of Technician Fifth Grade.  He
enlisted on Feb. 4, 1943 in New York City and was discharged Feb. 6, 1946 at
Fort Dix, N. J.
He served with the 360th Service Group in New Guinea, earning
the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Philippines Liberation
Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal and the American Service Medal.
Survivors include a son, Michael A. Mario of Catskill; a daughter,
Valerie Peck of Whiting, N.J.; two grandchildren, Kimberly Mario of Catskill and
Kristi Mario of Catskill; a twin brother, Benjamin Mario of Flushing; and
several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Millspaugh
Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 27 at St.

--  Anna Rita McGuigan, 86,
died Friday, March 23, 2001.
Born in 1914 to Frederick Hotaling and Anna (Prendergast) Hotaling, she
was a lifelong resident of Coxsackie.
Mrs. McGuigan retired from the New York State Department of Audit and
Control in 1987 after more than 20 years of public service.
She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church and a long-time member of
the St. Mary’s Rosary Society and the Columbiettes No. 548.
A lady of deep faith, Mrs. McGuigan was the matriarch of her beloved
family and a loyal friend, mentor and second mother to countless others.
Survivors include a daughter Kathleen Hale of Hennilar, N.H.; two sons,
William McGuigan of Syracuse and Thomas McGuigan of Cohoes; a sister, Maria
Kennedy of Coxsackie; nine grandchildren, Andrew McGuigan, Mark McGuigan,
Barbara McGuigan Donnelly, Mark Hale, Kevin Hale, Michael Hale, Elizabeth Hale
Campoli, Bridget McGuigan and Thomas McGuigan; four great-grandchildren; and
many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
Mrs. McGuigan was predeceased in 1962 by her husband, Andrew Webster
McGuigan, whom she married in 1937; a son, Michael McGuigan, a noted artist; two
sisters, Gertrude Sottile and Betty Carlson’ and a brother, Frederick (Chip)
Hotaling.
Relatives and friends may call at the W. C. Brady’s Sons Inc. Funeral
Home at 97 Mansion St. in Coxsackie on Monday, March 26 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9
p.m.
A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 27 at St.

Pa. – Rosina (Rose) Tressler, 94, of Sandy Plains Road, South Cairo, died
March 5, 2001 upon arrival to the VNA Hospice Unit of Community Medical Center
in Scranton, Pa.
Mrs. Tressler was born in New York City on Dec. 11, 1906 and was the
daughter of Charles Mansfield and Ellen (Moore) Mansfield.
She resided in the South Cairo area for 38 years and was active with the
South Cairo United Methodist Church bake sales. 
She loved to bake and crochet and enjoyed being with children of all
ages.  She will be missed by all who
knew her.
She was predeceased by her husband, William J. Tressler, in 1974, and a
daughter, Ellen Rose Tressler Beck, in 1995.
Survivors include three granddaughters Patricia Andrisani of Clarks
Summit, Pa., Diane Beck-Paniccia of Shoreham and Lorraine Beck-Leiblein of East
Patchogue; six great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and two dear friends,
Dolores Post and Alma Veverka.
Interment took place in the family plot of the Catskill Rural Cemetery.

– Edward Emanuel Gilbertsen, 73, formerly of East Windham, died Sunday, March
25, 2001, at Eden Park Nursing Home.
Born June 29, 1927, in Brooklyn, he was the son of Edward D. Gilbertsen
and Helen Johnson.
Mr. Gilbertsen served in the U. S. Army from 1946 to 1947. 
He served his apprenticeship as a carpenter while in the service in
Japan.  He married Agnes Morrison on
Nov. 11, 1949.  They moved to the
Catskill Mountains in 1950 and made their home in East Windham. 
He was a carpenter for more than 57 years and owned High Peak
Construction for 30 years.  He was a
charter member of the Knight of the Road in Windham and was a member for 40
years.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Agnes (Morrison) Gilbertsen’ a
daughter, Ruth K. Martin; two sons, Edward Gilbertsen Jr. and Robert Gilbertsen;
and nine grandchildren, Kerry Torington, Erica Kavanagh, Brian Gilbertsen,
Thomas Gilbertsen, Jenny Gilbertsen, Robert Gilbertsen Jr., Eric Gilbertsen,
Theresa Mallory and Kimberly Mallory.
Calling hours will be Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Decker Funeral

Born March 16, 1933, in Queens, she was the daughter of Patrick Kett and

She attended St. Patrick’s Academy of Catskill and graduated in 1950. 
A well-known area personality, she worked part-time as a Senior Companion
in her spare time and enjoyed working on arts and crafts.  She was a parishioner of St. Bridget’s Church of Leeds.
She married Edwin R. Rose, Sr. in 1953.

PALTZ – Thomas M. Suttmeier, 62, of Colonial Drive died Thursday, March 13,
2001, at home following a long illness.
Born Dec. 10, 1938, in Catskill, he was a son of the late John Suttmeier
and Dolores W. Costello Suttmeier.
He was a mental health counselor in private practice and a teacher at
Empire State College.
He was a graduate of SUNY New Paltz with a master’s degree in the
applied work of the humanistic psychologists. 
A resident of New Paltz for the past 35 years, he was an expert in family
systems counseling.  In addition to
counseling he ran educational workshops, created songs for children and wrote
poetry.
Survivors include his life partner of 35 years, Linda Griggs of New Paltz;
two brothers, Raymond Suttmeier of Cairo and John Suttmeier of Meridian, Conn.;
and a niece, nephews and cousins.
A
Memorial Mass and interment will be this spring in the family plot. 
A memorial meeting for worship at the Religious Society of Friends

Yonkers, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at the Teresian House in Albany. 
She had been a resident there since 1998.
Born Dec. 6, 1911, in County Mayo, Ireland, she was the daughter of the
late John Moyles and Ellen Clarke Moyles.
She and her late husband, James Gavin, moved to East Durham from Yonkers
in 1957 and they operated Gavin’s Golden Hill House in East Durham until 1991,
when the business was turned over to their son, John “Jack” Gavin.
Mrs. Gavin was a member of the East Durham Vocational Land Organization
and the Third Order of St. Frances, in Catskill.
Survivors include eight children, Mary E. Spellman of New Hartford; the
Rev. James Gavin, O.F.M., CAP Yonkers; John Gavin of 
Ease Durham; Catherine Leibowitz of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla; Thomas Gavin of
Chatham; William Gavin of Bronxville; Theresa Logue of Delmar; and Francis Gavin
of Claverack; a sister, Catherine Carr of Greenwich, Conn.; 18 grandchildren;
and several great-grandchildren.
She is predeceased by a sister, Bridget Moils.

She was employed at Bigelow’s Department Store as credit office manager
at the time of her retirement in 1979.
Survivors include her daughters, Joanne Elderman of Pembroke Pines, Fla.
and Gail Nathan, of Jamestown, with whom she resided; three grandchildren; a
niece and a nephew.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, 
Hermance Hallenbeck; and her brother, Charles Cerle.

He worked many years as a truck driver for the Greene County Highway
Department.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Freda Lane Peck; a son, Lawrence

grandson, Corey Baker of Maplecrest.

– Rose M. VanAken, 71, of Old Kings Highway, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at
the Benedictine Hospital, after a long illness.
Born Oct. 11, 1929 in Saugerties, she was the daughter of the late Frank
and Althea Ebling Augustine.
A lifetime area resident, Mrs. VanAken was an active member of the
Quarryville Methodist church, the Catskill Elks Lodge Ladies Auxiliary No. 1314,
and a former member of the Asbury Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary.
She was an avid bowler for more than 40 years and a member of the
Saugerties Bowlers club, of the Saugerties Bowlerettes Tuesday Nite League.
Survivors include her husband, Harold S. “Clancy” VanAken; two
daughters, Carol Doud of Rochester and Gail Edwards of Palenville; two sons,
Frederick A. Edwards and Richard D. Edwards, both of Palenville; a sister,
Violet Finger of Saugerties; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and
several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother George Augustine.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Seamon-Wilsey
Funeral Home, Inc., at John and Lafayette Streets.
