Daisy I. Burtis to Marry Mr. James here Saturday

Miss Daisy I. Burtis , 2201 Amsterdam avenue, New York, and Leonard H. James, a soldier at Port Monmouth, N.J., will be married here Saturday.

Miss Burtis, a statistical secretary is a sister of Mrs. Anthony T. Manzo., 220 Wisner Avenue, at whose home the wedding will take place. The Rev. Richard Billingsley, pastor of First Congregational Church, will officiate.

Mr. James was born in Philadelphia, a son of Leonard and Anne Vanderbey James. The prospective bride, a daughter of John and Zaldee Scribner Burtis, was born in Hunter.

A BRILLIANT WEDDING

Alexander Reed, Jr., and Miss Ella Spear Married.
A very brilliant wedding took place at 8 o’clock last evening at the house of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Spear, No. 328 West Twenty-third-street. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Henry Motet, and attracted a very large concourse of people, while the reception that succeeded was attended by about 200. The groom was Mr. Alexander Reed, Jr., of Coxsackie, NY who is engaged in railway and transportation business, and the bride Miss Ella Spear, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Spear. The ceremony being in the English style, there were no bridesmaids, and only two ushers-Mr. Charles Spear, Jr., brother of the bride, and Mr. Walter N. Copen. The bride was in a brilliant toilet of navy blue satin de Lyon and embossed velvet, with the usual accessories of bridal veil, bouquet, and ornaments of jewels. The bride’s mother was in black satin de Lyon and embossed velvet, and among the guests were many brilliant toilets. The parlors were decorated, and the collation which followed was superintended by one of the most accomplished caterers.

The presents were arranged in an apartment on the second floor, to which only the favored few possessed the open sesame. The reception extended from 8:30 until 11 o’clock.

A June Bride. Yesterday afternoon at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. And Mrs. William M. Edgerly of Cauterskill, this town, Miss Grace I. Edgerly was wedded to Abram Hack of this village, the Rev. C. G. Hazard of Christ’s Presbyterian Church performing the ceremony. Miss Mildred Vedder of Cauterskill was maid of honor, Edward Rightmyer of The Embogcht enacting the role of best man. Mr. and Mrs. Hack left on the 5:52 West Shore train for New York, Washington and other points, and on returning will occupy his newly-purchased home on West Bridge st.

DOYLE-LACKEY New York, N.Y., Oct. 1, 1910 At the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. Lackey, Jr., in this city, last Wednesday evening, their daughter Mary Louise was married to Mr. J. B. Doyle, of Clay Center, Kansas. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. James Keane, of the church of St. Francis DeSales. The wedding was in the parlors which were converted into a veritable garden of flowers, and the music for the occasion was furnished by a female orchestra, the Beasy quartette. The bride was dressed in white satin with over-dress of lace; the groom in the conventional suit of black. Miss Clara E. Lackey was bridesmaid. Mr. A. B. Delmar, of this city, being the best man, and little Regina Lackey, a niece of the bride, acting as flower girl. After the ceremony all present joined in the wedding dinner, in which nothing seemed wanting. Then followed song and mirth which lasted until nearly morning. The happy couple leave for a wedding tour taking in Boston, from which they go to the bride's parents in Tannersville, N.Y., for a brief stay, thence through the west and south, and will make their home at Clay Center, Kansas, where Mr. Doyle has his home. The bride was the recipient of many handsome and costly wedding presents. Among the many guests present were the Misses Pauline and Flora Campbell, of Tannersville, N.Y. The groom is well known as one of the star pitchers of the American League. [end article]

Notes: The bride was the daughter of Michael Lackey, Jr. and h/w Julia Farrell a/k/a Julia Weller (my great-grandparents.) Judd Bruce "Slow Joe" Doyle played for the New York Highlanders (NY Yankees), pitching 2 shutouts in his first 2 major league appearances. They later lived in Tannersville, where Mary was Postmistress, succeeding her brother J. Frank Lackey in the position; and where J. B. Doyle had a garage.

"This certifies that on the 14th day of October in the year of our Lord 1847 Mr. James Dolan and Miss Mary [Eliza] Miller were joined in the bonds of Holy Matrimony at Saugerties [Ulster Co] by Rev. John Maxwell according to the Rites of the Roman Catholic Church and in the presence of John Kevlin [and] Mary Igo. "The above is a true Copy of the Marriage Register of St. Mary's Church at Saugerties N.Y. [signed] Michael J. Murray, Pastor. March 14, 1900."

[James had a farm in Platte Clove, Hunter, Greene Co., NY, where the couple had 16 children. James (b. 5 Aug 1824) was in the 15th NY Engineers in the Civil War. Mary (b. 10 Aug 1831) was the dau of David Miller (b. 12 Oct 1806 in Woodstock) & Wyntje (Lavina) Hommel (b. 20 Jul 1810), md. in Katsbaan DRC 3 Jun 1827.]

Wedding Bells.
A quiet little company of relatives and friends gathered at the house of Mrs. M. E. Matthews, Jewett, N.Y., on Wednesday Sept. 19th, at 3 o'clock, P.M., to witness the marriage of her daughter, Sarah Matthews, to George Schermerhorn. The Rev. D. N. Chase officiating clergyman. After the guests had congratulated the happy couple they were escorted to the dining-room by the Rev. D. N. Chase and the bride's mother, where they enjoyed a very nice supper. Marriage of Young-Church in Village of Athens

YOUNG-CHURCH-In this village June 2, William Young of Wethersfield, and Louisa Church of this village.
A pretty home wedding took place Wednesday at high noon when Miss Louisa, daughter of Mrs. William E. Church of this village was united in marriage to William A. Young of Wethersfield, Conn. Promptly at the appointed hour the bridal party entered the parlor, which was nicely decorated for the occasion with cut flowers and ferns, and took their place in the center where the nuptial knot was tied by the Rev. W.R. Torrens, pastor of the Baptist church, in the presence of the immediate relatives and friends. The bride was prettily attired in princess gown of white Batiste trimmed with Valencenes lace and carried a bouquet of white carnations. Leroy Church, brother of the bride was the best man.
After the ceremony the guests enjoyed an elaborate dinner and the happy couple left on the 2:50 ferry for an extended trip amid a shower of rice, confetti and old shoes. The carriage was decorated with white ribbons and placards and as the carriage passed on the boat the Captain gave them a great send off. The bride was the recipient of many beautiful and useful presents. After their return here they will leave for Wethersfield, Conn., where a handsomely furnished home awaits them.

Submitted by Lodema DuBois Jenkins. Clipping is from the scrapbooks compiled by Lela DuBois Kirk (1897-1984). She was the daughter of Andrew DuBois and Lena Huggans and the wife of Harry Kirk. She lived her entire life in Greene County with the majority of time being spent in Spruceton.

On Christmas Day at noon, (1917) a very quiet wedding took place at the home of the bride's parents, Mr and Mrs Andrew DuBois at Ashland when their daughter, Lela Mae, was united in marriage to Harry D Kirke of Spruceton. The home was very prettily decorated with red and green; the ceremony being performed under an arch of evergreens and Christmas bells by Rev. Wm Van Noss of Middleburg, the ring service being used. Miss Mildred Brandow, of Ashland, was brides-maid and Frank Robinson, of Prattsville, acted as best man, friends of the bride. Only the immediate relatives of the bride and
groom were in attendance. The bride received many pretty and useful gifts. A bounteous dinner was served after which the happy couple left for Spruceton where the groom is engaged in farming. Their many friends extend congratulations and best wishes for a happy and prosperous married life.
